Puu Ualakaa State Park (Tantalus)
At the top of Tantalus is Puu Ualakaa State Park. The trailhead of the same name is located at the parking lot just past the park entrance and fits about 10 cars. At 9am we saw trail runners, a few other families and a group of elderly hikers but crossed them infrequently enough to have the trail to ourselves most of the time.
This 1 mile loop trail with gradual inclines and shading canopy make for a great family hike. Most of the way is green until you find this opening of blue sky along with Diamond Head gazing into the ocean.
Big brother walked the entire way while collecting sticks and leaves while little brother enjoyed most of it with his eyes closed in the ergo. This took us about an hour with frequent stops in response to calls for animals and outbursts to announce that buggies were coming
